From refer madness to cannabis medicine: Cannabis is becoming the all natural medicinal drug of the ages. More THC, CBD, and CBN healing properties are being discovered everyday. Marijuana was once considered a dangerous recreational drug by many senior citizens, but now it helps today's senior citizens escape the vicious cycle of pharmaceuticals that have become very addictive with many unhealthy side effects.
For decades now, marijuana has been portrayed as an illegal drug to get people high, and the ones who use marijuana are just drug addict hippie stoners looking for a way to escape reality. A simple "scare tactic," by the media, government, and pharmaceutical companies. Historic evidence reveals that people have been using cannabis since around 8,000 BCE. (might of been one of the first agricultural crops). Earlier records show cannabis use as medicine go back to China as far back as 2,737 BCE, where Emperor Shen Nung recommended and used cannabis tea to heal a variety of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used cannabis to relieve pain, and the Hindus in ancient India used ganja (another name for cannabis), for spiritual and medical purposes. Now we have scientific evidence from the medical community backing marijuana as an aide to health and wellness.
Today's elderly are among the fastest growing demographic group in the medical marijuana industry. According to statistics, cannabis use for adults between the age (50-64), has risen around 60% over the past few years of legalization. However, there has been a 250% relative increase for those (65-75) years of age. This trend has been a real threat to the pharmaceutical industry. Why? Because fewer pills are prescribed in legal medical marijuana states. Today's senior citizens are subject to daily combinations of toxic addictive drugs that kill thousands of seniors annually. "We have yet to see a single person die from a marijuana overdose."
So, What exactly are the medicinal, active, and sedative compounds found in cannabis? Well, with over 483 different chemical compounds in marijuana, the effects of most are still a mystery. However, the five core compounds that have been found in cannabis are THC, CBD,THCV, CBN, and CBG.
It is the THC that delivers the high stony effects in different marijuana strains. THC is activated (from THCV), when it is heated, then the psychoactive quality occurs. (Strains can range from as low as 5% to as high as 35% THC). The higher the THC, the more psychoactive the strain will be. THC has a variety of medical benefits to help fight forms of cancer, glaucoma, PTSD, anxiety disorders, IBD, and insomnia just to name a few.
CBD has a wide range of medical effects being pure medicine. Most know for preventing seizures in epileptic children. There are many strains today that are high in CBD and low in THC, which is why it makes such a good medicinal drug for children. (Healing without the high effect).
Strains high in THCV (mostly sativa strains), give a more racy and upbeat feeling. Even though psychoactive, it acts like an appetite suppressant. It also helps those with Diabetes aid in maintaining blood sugar levels.
CBN is the calming chemical that is converted from THC. The main benefit from CBN is a sleep aid.
Through recent studies they have found that CBG is like the parent to THC and CBD compounds. CBG also has known relaxing benefits like CBD, now being coined the term (Stem cell), for all other cannabinoids, CBG functions by blocking GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), and relaxing muscles. These five compounds are what make marijuana such a universal and all natural herb, with outstanding healing affects.
Below are seven things senior citizens should know about medical marijuana use.
1. Marijuana is safer than most over the counter prescribed medications.
The majority of seniors take over the counter or prescription drugs on a daily basis. Many of these drugs have serious side effects after long term use that include dizziness, headaches, organ failure, constipation, addiction, death from overdose, etc. Not a single person has ever died from marijuana overdose.
2. Marijuana can replace or reduce many prescription medications.
Seniors are given way to many pills in the form of cocktails that the first pill taken often causes side effects that the second pill is supposed to fix. Marijuana has healing properties that can target various conditions such as high blood pressure, digestive orders, appetite loss, headaches, chronic pain, insomnia, PTSD, and more. Not only that, the majority of seniors have more motor skill problems on prescription drugs doing daily tasks, whereas marijuana gives them a more clear head, better stability, making them more upbeat and sociable.
3. Marijuana is proven not to be physically addictive.
People who have used marijuana daily for some time will tell you that quitting is no problem. They can quit cold turkey with little to no withdrawals as opposed to pharmaceutical drugs. Quitting marijuana is similar to quitting caffeine or sugar.
4. There are unlimited strains of marijuana.
The cannabis industry are developing new strains of marijuana everyday that are helpful to many different ailments. For example, there are specific strains like (Indica strains), for chronic pain that will relax the muscles or give you a good nights sleep. Then there are (Sativa strains), that make you feel more focused and energized. They even have hybrid strains (Indica sativa mix), that give you the healing benefits of both strains.
5. There are marijuana CBD strains with no high effects.
Many seniors say they would try marijuana to get the medical benefit if they would not get the high. Well, marijuana cultivators have done just that. They have produced CBD genetic strains that have minimal to no psychoactive effect. These CBD (cannabidiol), strains are great for inflammation, muscle spasms, nausea, arthritis, etc.
6. There are ways to use marijuana without smoking it.
Many adults think they need to smoke marijuana to get the medical benefits. Medical marijuana growers and processers provide liquid extracts, infused candies, honey, oils, butter, and baked goods to choose form. They even make tinctures, balms, and lotions that can be used as topical ointments.
8. Marijuana helps increase appetite and may prevent obesity.
The most dangerous health risk among many seniors is loss of appetite that leads to unhealthy weight loss. Marijuana has been found to be very successful in alleviating nausea and as an appetite stimulant among cancer patients. There is also a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology that finds a connection between marijuana use and body weight. The study shows that the rates of obesity are lower by a third in people who smoke marijuana (three times a week), compared with those who did not use marijuana.
7. Marijuana does not cause brain damage or lower your intelligence.
A common misconception among aging adults is that marijuana can cause memory loss, lower intelligence, or cause brain damage. No documentation has been produced that show smoking marijuana kills brain cells. However, there are studies with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients that marijuana encourages new neural pathways. In many cases those with impaired brain function have shown that using marijuana in some form potentially halts further degeneration and even encourages brain function.
